Long Way from Here

Life’s Tidbits

Here are a couple of random thoughts and experiences I’ve had over the last week.

  • There’s no way for any of you to exactly relate to what it’s like to live in a country that shuts down all business 4 times a day for prayer. Interestingly, we talked to some people in Kuwait, and Oman, and Dubai, and SA is the only country that closes everything during prayer times. But, the other day I experienced just how deep the shutdown actually goes when I tried to use the ATM only to find that it wouldn’t accept my card because it, too, was closed for prayer!
  • I’ve reached a new level of admiration in the eyes of my gr. 8 boys lately. The reason? I took them up on a challenge to play them in 1 on 1 basketball at lunch. They were suitably impressed with my skills and the fact that I soundly thumped them. Obviously, they’re easily impressed! They really are great kids. I particularly like the way they respond to teachers. They are kind, respectful, fun loving, and value the time you spend with them. They’re not “too cool” to be kids, have fun, and enjoy simple things, y’know?
  • Elisha celebrated her birthday yesterday, and it was quite a muted celebration…I’m sure she’d have differents words to describe it. I think it’s at those times that we miss close friends and family. Heck, she even made her own cake. Some double chocolate cheesecake dealio. Some of you may have had it in the past.

Anyway, thanks for tuning in.

Update: I spent the lunch break playing 5 on 5 with the gr. 8 boys and the PE teacher in 37C heat. It was a great workout, a chance to sweat, and loads of fun. except we lost. but, the main thing is my team had a healthy supply of excuses, so really, the loss wasn’t our fault. ;-P

  1. Any chance you guys will be around MB this summer? We can re-celebrate Elisha’s b-day with old friends and have some of that yummy cheesecake “dealio” you were describing…
