A Day on the Red Sea and Jakob’s New First

Today I took the opportunity to spend the day on a rented boat and journey out to a reef in the Red Sea to do some snorkeling.  The people I went with were Scuba diving, but I was going just to snorkel.  The reef is about 60km into the Sea, and took about 1-1.5 hours to reach.  All told, I was gone from 9-4pm.  Total time spent snorkeling?  About 20 minutes.  That was including a couple of times I had to pause and feed the fishies…with some vomit.  Yes, the seas were rough and I was quite seasick for the majority of the day.  And you know what?  Nothing a person sees is all that impressive when they feel nautious and pukey.  Ah well.  All in all, I did get to see a few neat things, including a small shark, some marlins, and the coolest thing; a school of dolphins that swam before our boat.

In other news, Jakob took his first steps today!  Although, what exactly qualifies as a baby’s first steps?  How do you know if it really is their first steps? We figure today was the first time he got up on his own steam, stood still for a bit, then proceeded to walk, in control, for 4-5 steps.  Pretty cool, huh?

  1. I see your problem Chris – Gravol actually works much better for seasickness than Pringles do!!! When Jake and I went to Mexico we went deep-sea fishing with two others. One of the others and myself felt like we needed to take Gravol just in case, Jake and the other one claimed they had tough stomachs and never got sick. Needless to say, within half an hour Jake and the other one were puking over the side of the boat for the next 6 hours whereas the two that took Gravol were absolutely fine. Lesson learned :)
It is so much fun watching your child do all these incredible things for the first time. Enjoy! But be ready for a whole new life once he starts running :)
